Elbow connections keep the passer off your centre
Elbow-knee and elbow-hip frames are the organism constraint that makes half guard survivable.

"Connections to the inside of the top player's elbows — or to the outside of the elbows — control the top player's weight distribution and passing options. Losing both connections simultaneously is the guard being passed."
The top player’s weight is distributed through their arms as much as their hips. When the bottom player connects to the inside of the elbows — gripping the sleeves, touching the biceps, or creating frames at the elbow joint — they can redirect that weight, prevent the passer from dropping into stable passing positions, and maintain the distance needed to engage the guard. Inside elbow connections are the primary load-management tool available to the bottom player.
Outside elbow connections — gripping behind the triceps, hooking the outside of the arm — serve a different function. They prevent the top player from flaring the elbows out to sprawl, and they create the attachment points for upper-body sweeps and underhook battles. Both inside and outside connections matter; the critical condition is that at least one connection exists on at least one arm. A single maintained connection is a partially intact guard. Zero connections on both arms is a passed guard.
The elbow is the fulcrum of arm control because it is the joint that determines where the hand goes. Connecting at the elbow — not the wrist, not the shoulder — gives the bottom player leverage over the top player’s entire upper-body structure. A wrist connection is fragile and easily stripped. A shoulder connection is strong but too close, meaning the passer has already entered the space. Elbow connections are the mechanically optimal point.
Across the system, this principle expresses most cleanly in the following techniques:
Closed guard: The two-on-one elbow control or inside-elbow framing inside closed guard determines whether the top player can posture and pass. As long as the bottom player has connections to the inside of the elbows, the top player cannot bring their weight forward; lose both elbow connections and the top player postures up freely.
Butterfly guard: The bottom player’s hands fight to reach the inside of the top player’s elbows or to control the outside. Either connection works — what cannot be conceded is both at once. The whole sweep game depends on holding at least one elbow line; without it, the top player’s weight settles wherever it wants.
De la Riva guard: The bottom player’s grip on the outside of the top player’s lead elbow controls the top player’s lean and prevents the easy hand-down pass. Combined with the foot positioning, the elbow grip dictates where the top player’s weight can travel; lose the elbow and the top player drives a knee through.
Half guard: The under-hook is itself an inside-elbow connection — the bottom player’s shoulder under the top player’s armpit puts the elbow line under their control. As long as that connection holds, the top player cannot flatten the bottom player; both connections lost simultaneously is the half guard collapsing into a pin.
Octopus guard: The bottom player’s two-on-one grip on the top player’s far arm is an extreme version of elbow control — the inside elbow is pinned to the bottom player’s body. From that pinned-elbow position the top player’s weight is stuck off-balance, which is what makes the back take and sweep available.
