Toreando Recovery
guard
Grapplers Collective, Toreando Recovery. 3-5 min rounds.
Problem
Recovering guard against a toreando by framing straight-armed early and trading the frames for a leg connection before the chest lands.
Tell the room
The passer is mid-toreando. The bottom frames straight-armed and gets a leg back in front of the hips before the chest lands. Every scoring position holds for 3 seconds.
Setup
Start mid-toreando. Passer gripping the shins or pants with both of the bottom's legs steered to one side, hips circling. Bottom supine, hands free.
Score
Hold for 3 seconds.
- Passer — chest-to-chest with the legs cleared, both shoulders pinned, or side control
- Bottom — a foot, shin, knee, or hook back in front of the passer's hips
- Bottom — comes up to a seated base or stands to neutral, facing the passer
Rules
- Keep the pass moving. The passer cannot stall on the grip and must keep chasing chest-to-chest.
- Open hands only. The bottom frames without gripping the passer or their own legs.
- Restart with the legs cleared. Every exchange begins with the legs already steered to one side.
Adjust
Easier
Start the bottom with a straight-arm frame already planted on the passer's near shoulder, at 60-70 percent pressure.
Harder
Let the passer re-grip and toreando back the other way, and let the bottom grip too, so the exchange chains.
If it stalls
If the bottom keeps getting flattened, watch the elbows. Bent arms mean the frame came late, so shorten the passer's starting angle.
