Passing · INV-P01

The feet must be cleared before the torso can be held

Chest-to-chest on top of two active hooks is not a pass. Clear or pin the feet first.

Adapted from InGrappling, INV-P01. System Games did not invent this curriculum.

"The top player must clear the line of the feet before advancing. Attempting to pass while the feet are active is attempting to pass through the guard rather than around it."

The bottom player’s feet are the guard’s first line of structural resistance. As long as they are active — framing against the hips, hooking the legs, or threatening to re-engage — the top player cannot advance without being impeded. Passing through active feet means accepting all the frames, hooks, and re-guards those feet can create. Passing around active feet means neutralising them first so that the advance encounters no resistance.

Clearing the feet does not mean pinning them to the mat permanently. It means removing their structural relevance to the current passing line long enough to advance to the next control zone. This can be done by gripping and redirecting the ankles, by posting an arm to prevent re-engagement, by using the knee to pin a foot, or by moving to an angle that places the feet behind the advancing direction. The specific method depends on the guard position; the requirement is universal.

In half guard, this invariant is partially resolved before the exchange begins. The top player has already cleared one side of the foot line — one leg is trapped but the other side is already past the feet. This is why half guard passing focuses on the knee line and hip advancement rather than foot clearing: the foot line has been partially conceded (INV-G01 is partially resolved), and the remaining work begins from the knee line.

Across the system, this principle expresses most cleanly in the following techniques:

Toreando pass: The grip-and-push to the outside is purely a foot-clearing motion. The pass cannot begin until the bottom player’s feet are entirely off the centerline. Stepping in before the feet are cleared walks straight into a hook or a re-guard.

Leg drag: The drag relocates the bottom player’s foot rather than pushing it off, but it still satisfies the same condition — the foot is held offline before the pass advances. The drag is the foot clearance and the start of the knee-line capture in the same motion.

Knee cut pass: The knee cut starts by pinning the inside foot to the mat and committing the trapped leg’s foot to the trap. Once the bottom player’s feet are no longer free to insert hooks or push the passer’s knee, the cut advances. Skipping the foot pin and trying to slice through with active feet feeds a knee shield or a re-guard.

Closed-guard break (standing): The pass cannot begin while the closed guard is locked. Standing up to break the guard is the first form of foot clearance — the locked feet behind the back are forced to open. Until they open, the passer cannot advance to the knees.

Butterfly hook break: The hooks must be neutralised — pinned, smashed, or unloaded — before the pass advances. Stepping forward into active hooks generates the lift the bottom player needs for the sweep. Clearing the hooks first means absorbing or removing their lifting capacity, after which the pass can advance to the knee line.
