Seated Guard Engagement

PassingBeginner

passing

Grapplers Collective, Seated Guard Engagement. 3-5 min rounds.

Problem

Engaging and passing against a seated guard player who scoots and disengages.

Tell the room

Passer must make contact within 10 seconds and work to any pin. Guard player stays seated and fights for a connected guard. Connected guard means both feet on the passer with grips, held 5 seconds.

Setup

Start two meters apart. Guard player seated with legs forward. Passer standing, facing them. No grips, no contact, no advantage on either side.

Score

Pin, or 5 seconds connected.

  • Passer — reaches side control, mount, knee on belly, or north-south
  • Guard player — sweeps to top or submits
  • Guard player — holds both feet on the passer with grips for 5 seconds

Rules

  1. Engage within 10 seconds. The passer closes distance and makes contact before the count runs out.
  2. Guard player stays seated. No standing up at any point in the exchange.
  3. Pass before you submit. The passer establishes a passing position before attacking any submission.

Adjust

Easier

Start one meter apart and give the passer one grip — a sleeve or an ankle.

Harder

Let the guard player stand and drop the 10-second timer so the passer sets their own timing.

If it stalls

If the passer lands in hooks on every entry, have the guard player extend only one leg.
