Over-Under Conversion
transitions
Grapplers Collective, Over-Under Conversion. 4-5 min rounds.
Problem
Resolving the 50-50 over-under clinch through a back-take or front-headlock-to-strangle finish.
Tell the room
Start in a symmetric over-under clinch. Either player wins by taking the back or converting to a front-headlock strangle. Nothing else scores, and you cannot break the clinch to reset.
Setup
Start in the over-under clinch. Both standing chest-to-chest, each with one deep underhook and one overhook. Hips square, head on the underhook side.
Score
Take the back or strangle.
- Back-take: hands clasped behind the shoulder line, waist or seatbelt
- Finish it by lifting their feet for 1 second or forcing their hands down
- Front headlock: break them to both hands and lock a figure-4 strangle grip
- Then rotate them to their back inside that grip for a 2-second count
Rules
- No takedowns from the clinch. Inside trips, body locks, and lateral drops do not score.
- Never fully break contact. Keep one point of clinch contact; stepping out to neutral concedes the round.
- Strangle only through the front headlock. Guillotines, kimuras, and stray submissions score nothing alone.
Adjust
Easier
Back-take scores at 3 seconds behind the shoulder line, and the front headlock scores at the broken-down phase.
Harder
Allow takedowns from the over-under as a third finish, once both new finishes are working.
If it stalls
If the pummeling never commits, ask mid-round: “Which one are you going for right now?”
