The triangle taken from omoplata control when the shoulder lock will not finish. The legs are already over the shoulder and around the arm; converting means bringing the free leg across the neck and closing the figure-four, so a position that was attacking a shoulder is suddenly attacking a neck.

★ It exists because the two attacks punish opposite defences. A defender who postures up out of an omoplata straightens their spine and lifts their head into the space a triangle wants. A defender who stays folded down denies the triangle and keeps the shoulder loaded. They cannot do both, and the attacker does not have to choose in advance — the defender’s own answer picks the finish.

This is a separate instance from the guard triangle because the platform is different in kind. A guard triangle is shot from a guard, with both legs free and the opponent’s posture as the obstacle. This one starts with the legs already committed to an arm, which changes both the entry and what a failure costs.

Elevated RiskOmoplata Triangle is an elevated risk technique. A vascular strangle — the thigh across one carotid and the opponent's own trapped shoulder against the other, with the figure-four shortening the loop. ⚠ The conversion carries a shoulder risk the ordinary triangle does not: the arm is still in omoplata control while the legs reconfigure, so a rushed switch can load the shoulder in internal rotation at the same time as the neck. Serious injury can occur Seconds once the figure-four closes and the angle is taken. Shoulder loading can arrive during the conversion itself, before the strangle is set..
