Arm-out and arm-in change the geometry of the same strangle

Triangles and guillotines are not one shape. The trapped arm changes the angle you need.

"A strangle that closes around the neck without the opponent's arm inside it applies force more directly to the vascular structures. An arm-in strangle must compensate with tighter mechanics."

The pathway from choking surface to carotid artery is the critical mechanical variable in any strangle. When no arm is present inside the choke, that pathway is direct: the forearm, bicep, or leg presses against the neck with nothing between the choking surface and the target vascular structures. The force travels in a short, efficient line to the carotid. The strangle reaches its effect quickly and with less total force required.

When the opponent’s arm is inside the strangle — their shoulder and upper arm occupying space between the choking surface and the neck — the pathway lengthens. The choking surface must first displace the arm and then transmit force through it to reach the carotid. This requires additional pressure to achieve the same compression. The arm-in strangle is not a failed strangle; it is a mechanically less efficient strangle that requires compensatory adjustments to produce the same bilateral compression that an arm-out strangle achieves more directly.

The mechanical consequence is practical: an arm-in strangle that is applied with the same grip tightness as an arm-out strangle will feel less effective, finish more slowly, and provide more margin for the opponent to defend or wait it out. The adjustment is not to apply more raw force but to tighten the geometry — closing the triangle tighter, repositioning to minimise the arm’s buffering effect, or accepting that the finish will require a more precise angle and deeper bite on the neck.

Across the system, this principle expresses most cleanly in the following techniques:

Arm-in guillotine: The trapped arm is sandwiched between the choking forearm and the neck. Force has to travel through the arm before reaching the carotid, which is why arm-in guillotines demand a tighter pull-and-arch — the geometry must compensate for the buffer the arm creates.

Arm-in triangle: The trapped arm sits inside the triangle, occupying the space the thigh would otherwise compress directly into the carotid. The finish requires the legs to close further, the head to be pulled more aggressively, and the angle to be more precise than a standard triangle would need.

Standard rear naked choke (no arm in): The choke closes around the bare neck with nothing buffering the carotids — this is the arm-out condition at its cleanest. The forearm bone and bicep load the vascular structures directly, which is why a properly finished RNC needs little additional force to reach the tap.

D’arce vs. arm-in D’arce: The D’arce works around the trapped arm by routing the choking arm over the trapped shoulder and under the neck. Even so, the trapped arm is partially buffering the choke on its side — the finish demands a tighter wrap and a more committed shoulder drive than the equivalent geometry would require without the arm in the way.

Anaconda vs. mounted triangle finish: An anaconda compresses the neck through the trapped shoulder and arm, with the arm acting as the buffer. The mounted triangle, by contrast, often finds an arm-out condition where the lock closes against the bare neck — and finishes faster as a consequence.
