Monoplata
The monoplata — the mount-side omoplata-family lock. The arm is trapped bent, the shin presses the shoulder line, and the attacker sits back.

The monoplata is the mount-side member of the omoplata family. From mount or S-mount, the opponent’s arm is trapped bent — the chicken-wing shape, elbow flexed, hand near their head — and pinned. The attacker swings a leg over the opponent’s head and shoulder so the shin or calf presses down across the shoulder line, then sits back armbar-style. With the shoulder fixed under the leg and the bent arm held, the sit-back drives the trapped shoulder into internal rotation.
The bent arm is the technique’s signature. The armbar available from the same mount-side position takes a straightened arm and attacks the elbow; the monoplata takes the arm that stays bent and attacks the shoulder. The two finishes share the position and split the opponent’s arm-shape answers between them — an opponent who keeps the elbow flexed to deny the armbar has offered the monoplata.
Within the family, the monoplata shares the omoplata’s target — forced internal rotation of the shoulder — with the roles of body and leg rearranged. The omoplata is applied from underneath: the guard player’s legs trap the arm and body rotation supplies the force. The monoplata is applied from on top: the pin holds the bent arm, the leg fixes the shoulder line, and the sit-back supplies the rotation.
Elevated RiskMonoplata is an elevated risk technique. The monoplata drives the trapped shoulder into forced internal rotation with the arm bent — the same structural attack as the omoplata, loading the posterior glenohumeral capsule, posterior labrum, and posterior rotator cuff. Applied from the top with the opponent pinned, the attacker's bodyweight through the sit-back can load the joint quickly, and the load builds with little visible movement. Because the submission is less common, training partners may have less familiarity with the tap warning signal for this specific loading angle. Serious injury can occur variable — shoulder submissions can produce joint damage before acute pain; apply slowly.
