The Bulldog choke is a single-arm headlock choke applied from the side or back of a turtled or scrambling opponent. One arm wraps around the neck — the forearm crossing the front of the throat — and the hands lock together. Mechanically it is a rear naked choke grip with no hooks: the same wrapping arm, the same squeeze, held from a side angle with bodyweight instead of back control. It is a functional schoolyard headlock, refined into a finishing hold.

The classic moment is mid-scramble. The opponent in turtle turns toward the attacker, turns away, or tries to stand — and in that movement the neck passes through the wrapping arm’s path. The arm snaps around, the hands lock, and the attacker sits the legs out past the opponent’s shoulder or sprawls the chest down and leans back, driving bodyweight through the wrapped neck while squeezing. The setup cost is low; the technique punishes any opponent who exposes the neck while turning or standing.

The Bulldog is a mixed choke. The single forearm across the front of the neck loads the trachea as well as the carotid arteries. That airway component is part of the technique — it is part of why the choke finishes fast, and part of why it must be tapped early rather than endured.
