O Goshi
O goshi — the major hip throw. The attacker turns in, loads the opponent fully across the hip, and rotates them over the fulcrum.

O goshi is the major hip throw — the version of the hip throw in which the opponent is loaded fully across the attacker’s hips before the rotation begins. The attacker turns in so their hips arrive in front of and below the opponent’s, passes the lifting arm around the opponent’s back, and bends forward while continuing to pull down and across. The opponent’s weight is carried on the attacker’s hip line and rotates over it.
In the Kodokan classification o goshi is the full hip throw — two halves of hip contact, against the half-hip of uki goshi. That distinction is the whole family: every hip throw shares the same fulcrum, and they differ in how much of the opponent’s weight the fulcrum is asked to carry and what the upper body uses as a lever.
In no-gi the throw survives without its traditional grip. The judo version takes a sleeve and a collar; the no-gi version takes an underhook or a body lock and accepts that the pull is less precise. What does not change is the hip: an o goshi is defined by the hip arriving deep and low enough to carry the load, and no grip compensates for a hip that does not.

Why it works hereO goshi asks more of kuzushi than any other hip throw because it asks the hip to carry the whole opponent. The forward-and-down pull must be established before the turn-in and held through it — an attacker who breaks posture, releases, and then turns in arrives under an opponent who has re-based, and the throw becomes a lift against dead weight. The pull is not a preparation for the throw; it is the condition the throw runs inside.
See full invariant page → This is the reason o goshi is taught early and finished late. The mechanics are simple to demonstrate on a compliant partner and hard to land on a resisting one, and the gap between the two is almost entirely the sustained loading the invariant describes.
