The toe hold taken from the truck. You are sitting perpendicular to a downed or turtled opponent with one of their legs trapped between both of yours and their hips lifted off the mat — and the same control that makes the calf slicer available presents the foot.

The division of labour is what makes this instance different. In every ashi toe hold your legs hold the entanglement and your arms take the grip, which means the grip competes with the control. In the truck your legs already own the leg completely, so both hands are free for the figure-four from the moment you want it.

It shares the position with the calf slicer, the kneebar, the straight ankle lock and the twister, and it is rarely the first of those an attacker reaches for. It is what opens when the defender solves the others.

Elevated RiskTruck Toe Hold is an elevated risk technique. Plantarflexion and inversion torque through a figure-four on the foot, loading the ankle joint and the midfoot. From the truck the defender is face-down with their hips elevated and cannot see the grip being built, so the usual visual warning is absent — and the truck removes the hip rotation they would otherwise use to follow the torsion out. Serious injury can occur Short, and shorter than it feels. The toe hold gives less warning than an ankle lock, and the truck takes away the movement a defender uses to notice..
