Straight Ankle Lock

The straight ankle lock — Achilles lock — is the foundational lower limb submission. Legal in all major rulesets.

Adapted from InGrappling, Straight Ankle Lock. System Games did not invent this curriculum.

The straight ankle lock compresses the Achilles tendon and loads the anterior ankle capsule by driving the hip into the ankle while holding the foot. It is the first leg submission most grapplers encounter and the gateway to understanding all lower limb attack mechanics.

Unlike heel hooks, the straight ankle lock works by forcing the foot into plantarflexion — the toes driven away from the shin, past the range the ankle can sustain under load — while the forearm compresses the Achilles from behind. The forearm is the fulcrum and the hip extension is the force. The hip extension, not the arm squeeze, provides the force. The squeeze holds the ankle in position; the hip creates the submission.

It is legal in all major competitive formats and is the correct starting point before studying any restricted leg submission.

Elevated RiskStraight Ankle Lock is an elevated risk technique. The straight ankle lock forces the ankle into plantarflexion — the toes driven away from the shin — while the forearm compresses the Achilles from behind, so the anterior capsule and the tendon load together. It is the leg lock most beginners meet first, and its reputation as the mild one is the risk: poorly positioned locks or fast application cause tendon and ligament damage before the pain has told the defender anything useful. Serious injury can occur when force is applied quickly or the angle is sharp.

If you are new to this technique: read this section before anything else. Understanding the danger is part of understanding the technique.

The person applying the technique is responsible for releasing immediately.

Communicate before drilling. Know your partner's experience level with this position.

Do not train this technique while fatigued or in live rolling without established mat culture.
