Cross Ashi Garami — Defending

Defending the saddle in no-gi — the shortest clock in the leg game. Hide the heel, deny the second leg, and understand why every reliable escape happens before the position is finished.

This is the saddle from underneath — the side of the position nobody chooses. Your leg is crossed and trapped, the attacker sits perpendicular to you with both of their legs committed to one of yours, and the inside heel is the thing they want.

The saddle is the strongest leg entanglement in the sport, and the reason is not the finish. It is that the attacker holds it almost for free. Their legs do the work, their hands stay available, and they can wait. You cannot. That asymmetry — cheap to hold, expensive to survive — is what this page is about.

Nothing here is a rescue from a finished saddle. Every reliable answer happens before the position is complete, which is why the page spends more time on the moments before than on the position itself.

Elevated RiskCross Ashi Garami (Defending) is an elevated risk technique. The inside heel hook loads the knee through internal rotation of the tibia against a fixed femur. The ligaments — ACL, MCL, and the meniscus behind them — fail before pain arrives, which is the single most important fact on this page. A defender waiting for the sensation that tells them to tap is waiting for a signal that comes after the damage. Serious injury can occur Faster than the decision to tap. Treat the attacker reaching the heel as the deadline, not the moment you feel rotation..

If you are new to this technique: read this section before anything else. Understanding the danger is part of understanding the technique.

The person applying the technique is responsible for releasing immediately.
