Woj Lock Escape

Woj lock escape — hide the heel, rotate the hips toward the entangled side and extract. Do not bridge: hip extension is what finishes it. No late stage.

The Woj lock is an outside heel hook and an ankle lock at once, attacked from the inside line — which is why it is so often mistaken for an inside heel hook, and why defending it as one prepares you for the wrong direction. For the attack, see Woj Lock. The hooking elbow drives closer to the body and the finish comes from hip extension combined with a shoulder drop rather than from arm rotation. The injury mechanism is identical to any inside heel hook — the knee, the medial ligaments, the ACL — and the risk profile is unchanged.

Two things follow from that finishing motion and they shape this entire page.

First: do not bridge. Bridging is hip extension, and hip extension is what the attacker is using to finish. The reflex to bridge under pressure is nearly universal and here it accelerates the rotation — the defender supplies the mechanism. Second: there is no late stage. Once the grip closes, the honest answer is the tap. No escape below offers a way out of a finished Woj lock, because there is not one worth teaching.

Elevated RiskWoj Lock (Defence) is an elevated risk technique. Two joints at once. The rotation is external, so the knee structures at risk are the LCL and the posterolateral corner, not the MCL and ACL — the inside line it comes from says nothing about which way the knee turns. The ankle is everted at the same time and faster, loading the deltoid ligament on the medial side; eversion is the direction the ankle resists least. The speed means the ligaments fail before pain registers. What is specific to this variant is the finishing motion: hip extension plus a shoulder drop rather than arm rotation. Because the defender's instinctive response to pressure is also hip extension, a bridging defender adds directly to the finishing force, and the submission completes faster than the attacker could manage alone.
