TOP PLAYER (ATTACKER)
POSITION
After a soft tackle from standing: head and near arm wrapped on one side. Play goes live the moment the defender's hips touch the mat.
OBJECTIVE
Work across to the far side of your own head with controlling pressure.
CONSTRAINTS
One hand stays low. Defender never pries with both hands; one works the hip, leg, or head. The attacker keeps the connection. No releasing the head and arm to reposition. No submissions before the switch. The attacker scores position first, not a strangle. Reset when the attacker moves the torso to the opposite side of their head with controlling pressure; or when the defender frames the head and arm while the legs attach to the attacker's hips. 3-5 min rounds.
WIN CONDITION
Moves the torso to the opposite side of their head, with controlling pressure.
BOTTOM PLAYER (DEFENDER)
POSITION
Kneels tall with hands high, then lands with hips on the mat under the head-and-arm. Play goes live the moment the hips touch the mat.
OBJECTIVE
Frame the head and arm, and connect the legs to the attacker's hips.
CONSTRAINTS
Same one-hand-stays-low, keep-the-connection, no-submission-before-the-switch, and named reset rules. 3-5 min rounds.
WIN CONDITION
Frames the head and arm while the legs attach to the attacker's hips.
Grapplers Collective, Head-and-Arm Tackle Defense. 3-5 min rounds.
Problem
Defending the strangle from the bottom of a tackle by moving the hips, not the hands.
Tell the room
Attacker tackles the defender down with a head-and-arm and works across to the far side of their own head. Defender frames and connects legs to the attacker's hips. Play goes live the moment the defender's hips touch the mat.
Setup
Start from a soft tackle. Defender kneels tall with hands high. Attacker tackles from standing and lands with head and near arm wrapped on one side.
Score
Cross sides, or connect the hips.
- Attacker — moves the torso to the opposite side of their head, with controlling pressure
- Defender — frames the head and arm while the legs attach to the attacker's hips
Rules
- One hand stays low. Defender never pries with both hands; one works the hip, leg, or head.
- The attacker keeps the connection. No releasing the head and arm to reposition.
- No submissions before the switch. The attacker scores position first, not a strangle.
Adjust
Easier
Drop the no-submission rule so strangles count from any side, keeping live pressure without the positional puzzle.
Harder
Require a 5-second hold of the new side before the attacker's switch counts.
If it stalls
If the defender wrist-fights with both hands, cue: "Where your hips go, the strangle goes."
