The straight arm shoulder lock catches an arm in extension and drives the wrist downward against a fulcrum at or above the elbow, loading the shoulder at the end of its range. For the attack, see Straight Arm Shoulder Lock. It is available from mount, side control and knee-on-belly, and it costs the attacker nothing to try — the pin is not undone to attempt it.
The finish itself is uncommon; what it punishes is not. Every new grappler under a pin extends an arm into the attacker’s chest or hip and pushes, and that arm is the submission. Learning to defend it is the same lesson as learning not to push from underneath, which is why it belongs in a beginner’s first months rather than alongside the other shoulder locks.
It shares that property with the wristlock — both are punishments for a posture rather than for a positional mistake, and both are defended almost entirely before anyone touches you.
Elevated RiskStraight Arm Shoulder Lock (Defence) is an elevated risk technique. The submission loads the shoulder at the end of its downward range with the elbow locked straight, which puts the force through the anterior capsule and the labrum rather than through musculature. Because the arm is already extended when the lock is applied, there is no slack anywhere in the limb — the travel from set to structural load is short, and much of it feels like ordinary pressure rather than like a submission. Shoulder injuries from this mechanism tend to be capsular or labral, which are slow to heal and prone to recurrence. Serious injury can occur Short. The arm starts at the end of its range, so there is little travel between the press seating and the joint loading..
