Fundamental Escape Movements

Escape movements — bridge, shrimp, Granby roll, sit-out, stand-up, kipping. All named escapes are built from these six.

Every specific escape technique is a combination of a small number of foundational movements. These movements are not themselves escape techniques — they are the mechanical vocabulary from which escapes are constructed. A practitioner who cannot perform these movements cannot execute escapes. A practitioner who has drilled them to mechanical fluency has the foundation for every escape in grappling.

These six movements form the complete movement vocabulary for bottom-position grappling: bridge, shrimp, Granby roll, sit-out, technical stand-up, and kipping. They can be drilled solo. They should be.

INV-16Invariant ""Escape mechanics require creating space before moving through it. A pinned or controlled player cannot move into space that does not exist. Every escape sequence has two stages: the creation of space (the frame, the bridge, the push) and the movement through it (the shrimp, the hip escape, the re-engagement). Reversing the order fails.""

Why it works hereThe six movements split cleanly across the two stages of the invariant. The bridge creates space by lifting the hips against the opponent's weight; the shrimp is the lateral travel into that space. The Granby roll and sit-out are body-rotation movements that change orientation under existing connection so a usable angle appears. The technical stand-up and kipping then carry the body through the gap created upstream. A practitioner who drills these in isolation but never sequences create-then-move is drilling vocabulary without grammar.

Why it works hereThe bridge that lifts the hips off the mat opens space the bottom player intends to shrimp into — but the same gap is available to the top player to chest-stuff and re-pin. This is why each movement below is described in terms of size and speed: a shrimp travels only as far as the next knee insertion needs, a sit-out fires while the opponent's weight is still mid-shift, a Granby roll commits before the seatbelt closes. Large or paused movements give the contested space back to the opponent, who is fighting for the same gap from the other side.

The bridge is hip extension from the back, driving the hips off the mat. It creates upward force against the top player’s weight and is the primary space-creation movement for escapes from mount and back positions.

Lateral bridge — the standard upa direction. Hips drive up and toward one side simultaneously, rolling the body onto one shoulder. This is the base of the trap-and-roll (upa reversal) from mount.
