Heel hook defence is four universal principles plus a set of mechanics that change with the entanglement you are caught in. The principles are the same whether the leg is trapped in ashi garami, outside ashi, cross ashi or 50/50; the specific escapes are not, because each configuration controls a different part of the leg and hip.

The principles are collected below, followed by the named mechanics for each position. Study them alongside the entanglements themselves:

Outside ashi garami: /technique/leg-entanglements/outside-ashi-garami

Cross ashi garami: /technique/leg-entanglements/cross-ashi

The heel hook is the fastest-injury submission in grappling. The escape mechanics require understanding the four universal principles first — they are not optional context, they are the foundation without which the specific techniques cannot be applied correctly.

Elevated RiskHeel Hook (Defence) is an elevated risk technique. Heel hook rotation damages the ACL, MCL, LCL, and posterior cruciate ligament. The injury occurs before pain is felt — the ligaments tear before the nervous system has time to report damage. This is the shortest injury timeline of any submission in grappling. Serious injury can occur before pain is registered.

If you are new to this technique: read this section before anything else. Understanding the danger is part of understanding the technique.
