The Estima lock clasps around your foot and breaks it. For the attack, see Estima Lock. It comes from ashi garami and it hunts a specific target — a foot left on the attacker’s hip or belly line, where the clasp can close around it.

There is no late stage. Once the clasp closes, the Estima lock breaks the foot before pain registers. Not “before pain becomes severe” — before it registers at all. That puts it in the same category as the inside heel hook and the Woj lock: two stages, then the tap, with the absence of a third stated rather than glossed over.

Everything worth learning is therefore about where your foot lives. The submission has one hunting ground and you decide whether your foot is in it.

Elevated RiskEstima Lock (Defence) is an elevated risk technique. A clasp closed around the foot, breaking it through compression and leverage on the small bones and the midfoot structures. The distinguishing feature is the warning: there is effectively none. Unlike a joint lock that loads progressively through a range, the Estima's clasp reaches breaking force with very little travel, and the foot's structures fail before the pain signal arrives. A broken foot is also a long, awkward injury — non-weight-bearing for weeks and interfering with everything, including walking. Serious injury can occur Before pain registers.
