The electric chair captures your leg from underneath and splits it away from the other one, stretching the adductors, groin and hip. For the attack, see Electric Chair. It comes from the lockdown in half guard, which makes it one of the few submissions you defend from on top — the attacker is beneath you and the danger is in your own hips.
The thing that makes it awkward is that it is not only a submission. From the same capture the bottom player can extend into the stretch or elevate into a sweep, and those two answers pull in opposite directions: defending the stretch by posting and staying heavy helps the sweep, and defending the sweep by staying light helps the stretch. You cannot address both, which is the dilemma the whole position is built on.
That dilemma decides the late stage. When the split is opening, the correct trade is to concede the sweep — give up the position and keep the hip. It is the same tissue and the same signal problem as the banana split, arriving from the opposite side of the exchange.
Elevated RiskElectric Chair (Defence) is an elevated risk technique. The electric chair loads the adductors, the groin and the hip capsule through a split-style stretch. Because the force lands on large muscle and connective tissue rather than a small joint, it presents as a stretch rather than as a submission, and the sensation does not escalate sharply as the tissue approaches failure. Adductor and groin tears at the origin are slow to heal and recur under exactly the loads grappling asks for. Flexible defenders are at more risk, because more of the movement happens inside comfortable range. Serious injury can occur Seconds under a committed extension, with a stretch sensation that does not track the load..
