The body triangle replaces the hook configuration with a figure-four leg lock around the opponent’s torso. One leg passes around the waist; the other leg’s shin locks behind the knee of the first leg, creating the figure-four. The result is a rigid leg structure that compresses the torso, prevents the bridge, and removes the opponent’s primary escape tool from standard hook back control.
The body triangle is applied from seatbelt. It does not replace the seatbelt grip — the seatbelt remains in place. The body triangle is a leg-control upgrade that changes the mechanical context of the entire position. With hooks, the bottom practitioner can attempt to bridge and roll. With the body triangle, bridging compresses the ribs further rather than creating positional improvement.
Training note on rib injury: The body triangle loads the floating ribs. This is a legitimate injury mechanism. Sustained heavy body triangle pressure can fracture floating ribs, particularly if the top practitioner locks the triangle with significant compression and holds it. Training partners should tap to heavy body triangle pressure — not only to the accompanying strangle. This is a pressure tool, and pressure tools cause injury when partners hold rather than tap. The body triangle is not elevated safety tier because it is applied deliberately and both practitioners can manage the pressure; it does require a specific briefing in training environments that are not familiar with it.
Training note on the locked ankle: The risk runs in both directions. The wrapping leg puts the attacker’s ankle and foot across the front of the defender’s waist, inside both of their hands, and the locking shin presents an edge that can be turned into a calf slicer. A footlock taken on that ankle arrives with as little warning as the rib pressure does, and the attacker cannot see it coming. Brief both practitioners before drilling: the bottom taps to rib pressure, and the top taps to ankle and knee pressure, without waiting to see whether the leg attack is finished properly.
Side of application: the position is asymmetric, and the convention taught here is to lock the triangle on the side opposite the strangle arm. If the strangle arm (seatbelt top arm) is on the right, the locking leg wraps from the left. Locking away from the strangle keeps the choking side of the body clear to work, so the two systems occupy different halves of the opponent rather than competing for the same one. This is a coaching preference, not a mechanical requirement — the same-side lock is used and it is not structurally broken. Pick a default, know why it is the default, and be able to work from either.

Why it works hereThe bridge is the defender's primary back-escape tool against hooks — it generates space for the rotation that faces the attacker. The body triangle mechanically eliminates the bridge: pushing upward drives the ribs into the locking shin instead of creating space. The defender's escape system must now route around this segmentation entirely, working laterally rather than upward, which is a categorically different problem than the standard seatbelt escape.
