Straight Armlock
Straight armlock — the arm-crush attack on an arm run across its owner's chest, compressed downward against the attacker's sternum from side control, north-south or knee on belly.

The straight armlock attacks the arm when it is crossing the opponent’s own chest horizontally — extending from their far shoulder across their torso toward the near side. This position occurs when the bottom player frames or pushes with the arm crossing their body, which is common from side control bottom when the opponent is trying to push the top player’s hip or create space.
The mechanics differ fundamentally from the standard armbar. The standard armbar hyperextends the elbow by lifting from below — the hip under the elbow drives the posterior capsule. The straight armlock compresses the elbow from above — the attacker traps the arm across their own chest and pushes down from above, loading the medial elbow structures through lateral compression.
This is an opportunistic submission — it is available when the opponent creates the across-the-chest frame, not as a primary position sought. A practitioner who recognises the arm-across-the-chest exposure and converts immediately, before the opponent withdraws the arm, captures high-percentage opportunities that other practitioners miss.
A note on the name. This page was previously titled the cross-chest armbar. That name is taken: in published usage “cross armbar”, “cross-chest armbar” and “cross-body armbar” all mean the ordinary juji-gatame, where cross describes the attacker lying across the opponent rather than the defender’s arm crossing their own chest. The attack described here belongs to the ude-gatame or arm-crush family, and straight armlock is the name it is filed under on this site. It is distinct from the straight arm shoulder lock, which loads the same limb in the other direction — though which joint gives is decided partly by the defender’s own joint laxity, which is why coaches disagree about where the line falls.
Ruleset context This technique is legal in all major competitive formats.
Elevated RiskStraight Armlock is an elevated risk technique. The straight armlock compresses the elbow from the lateral side, loading the medial structures — specifically the medial epicondyle and ulnar collateral ligament. This compression direction is less familiar to most practitioners than hyperextension. The force can build quickly when the attacker's chest and arm apply combined downward pressure, and the defender may not recognise the submission until significant load has accumulated. Serious injury can occur can accumulate rapidly from combined chest and arm downward pressure.
