Sit-Out and Stand-Up Mechanics
The sit-out and stand-up — the highest-priority exit in the scramble. Technical stand-up, sit-out, and wrestle-up mechanics for getting back to your feet.

Standing up is the highest-priority escape in the scramble hierarchy. A player who achieves standing from a ground or scramble position immediately holds the structural advantage that the height principle (higher hip wins the scramble) describes: they can direct force downward, access every shooting angle, and force the opponent to cover ground to re-engage.
This page documents the technical execution of standing from the most common bottom positions: the technical stand-up (from all-fours or base position), the sit-out (transitional standing entry from a bottom position), the stand-up from turtle, and the wrestle-up from half guard and seated guard. Each is a separate skill with its own mechanics, but all express the same structural principle.

Why it works hereStanding is the maximum-height resolution of any scramble — it is why the technical stand-up sits at Priority 1 in the hierarchy. Every other entry on this page (sit-out, stand-up from turtle, wrestle-up) is a partial-height intermediate that exists because full standing was not immediately available. The mechanical payoff of standing is not the position itself but the inversion of the height asymmetry: the player who was below now directs force downward, and the opponent who was above now must close vertical distance to re-engage.

Every other position in the scramble hierarchy (shoot, turtle) is a compromise between gaining height and maintaining structural integrity. Standing up eliminates the compromise — it achieves both simultaneously.

Why it works hereThe technical stand-up's post-and-step sequence is a base disruption applied to the top player. As the bottom player's posted hand and stepping foot drive the hips up, the top player's weight — which was distributed across the bottom player as their support — must redistribute forward to compensate. That compensatory shift is the moment the stand-up completes, because the top player's base is now over their hands rather than their hips. The technique works against any size opponent because it attacks the support geometry, not the load. A slow stand-up fails not from lack of force but because it gives the top player time to re-establish weight over a new support point.
