Scramble Principles
Scramble framework — three-task hierarchy, height and hip height principle, position selection and decision-making.

A scramble is any minimally-connected or disconnected phase of grappling — the moments between established positions where neither player has achieved the body connection and control that defines a position. Most technique resources treat these moments as chaotic gaps navigated by athleticism and instinct.
This is the wrong frame. Scrambles obey structural laws that can be identified, learned, and drilled. The framework documented here treats scrambles as a structured decision system with a priority order and identifiable mechanical properties.
The core insight: in any scramble, height and structural base determine outcomes. Every decision in the hierarchy below is an expression of that single principle.

Why it works hereThe three-task hierarchy on this page is a pure ordering by height: stand up (full height), shoot (explosive height change to penetrate under), turtle (preserved structural base from low position). The breakdown chain — rear body lock to four-point to turtle to hip to back — is the top player's mechanism for systematically subtracting hip and head height from the bottom player. The chain is not arbitrary; each step removes a specific increment of height, and the bottom player's defensive priority is to interrupt before the next height loss occurs.

The player who is lower must work upward against gravity; the player who is higher has gravity available as a tool. This asymmetry is not subtle. At the highest levels, it is the determinative factor in scramble outcomes.

Why it works hereThe connection-point hierarchy described later on this page (hip lock, then hook, then hand) is graded by how strongly the first connection constrains the opponent's response. A claimed underhook forces the opponent to work around it; a claimed wrist control merely starts the conversation. The proactive frame — entering every scramble with a planned reach — exists because the first connection sets the geometry within which all subsequent decisions are made. Reactive scramblers are not slower; they are working inside a frame the opponent has already drawn.
