TOP PLAYER (ATTACKER)

POSITION

Chest-to-chest, attacker's underhook deep with the hand on the back.

OBJECTIVE

Attacker starts with a deep underhook and square feet. Get your foot past their foot and dump them backward.

CONSTRAINTS

Enter from the underhook side. No double legs, no shooting single legs from out front. Defender holds ground. No more than two back-pedal steps in any direction. Backward finishes only. Forward hip throws and forward sweeps do not score. Reset when the attacker dumps the defender onto butt or back with the underhook held through the fall; when the defender strips the underhook to a 2-on-1 or full outside control; or when the defender holds a tight whizzer with the attacker's posture broken to 45 degrees for 3 seconds. 3-5 min rounds.

WIN CONDITION

Dump the defender onto butt or back, underhook held through the fall.

BOTTOM PLAYER (DEFENDER)

POSITION

Both sets of feet parallel — neither has stepped past the other.

OBJECTIVE

Defender scores by stripping the underhook or holding a whizzer for 3 seconds.

CONSTRAINTS

Same enter-from-the-underhook-side, defender-holds-ground, backward-finishes-only, and named reset rules. 3-5 min rounds.

WIN CONDITION

Strip the underhook to a 2-on-1 or full outside control; or tight whizzer, attacker's posture broken to 45 degrees, held 3 seconds.

Grapplers Collective, Underhook Back Step Entry. 3-5 min rounds.

Problem

Connecting a deep underhook to a foot-past-the-leg position against a squared-up defender.

Tell the room

Attacker starts with a deep underhook and square feet. Get your foot past their foot and dump them backward. Defender scores by stripping the underhook or holding a whizzer for 3 seconds.

Setup

Start square with the underhook in. Chest-to-chest, attacker's underhook deep with the hand on the back. Both sets of feet parallel — neither has stepped past the other.

Score

Rearward dump, or the underhook lost.

  • Attacker — dump the defender onto butt or back, underhook held through the fall
  • Defender — strip the underhook to a 2-on-1 or full outside control
  • Defender — tight whizzer, attacker's posture broken to 45 degrees, held 3 seconds

Rules

  1. Enter from the underhook side. No double legs, no shooting single legs from out front.
  2. Defender holds ground. No more than two back-pedal steps in any direction.
  3. Backward finishes only. Forward hip throws and forward sweeps do not score.

Adjust

Easier

Start each exchange with the foot already past the leg line for 30 seconds, then reset to square feet.

Harder

Defender adds whizzer pressure on the underhook arm from the start of every exchange.

If it stalls

If the attacker pushes straight into the frame, cue: “Snap the head down or drag them sideways first.”
