Pick the Shot
takedowns
Grapplers Collective, Pick the Shot. 3-5 min rounds.
Problem
Reading distance and angle to enter the double leg against a moving defender with hands stripped out.
Tell the room
Defender keeps both hands behind their back and moves. Attacker gets one shot per exchange and must pick the moment. The hip pin counts after a continuous 5-second count.
Setup
Start at engagement distance. The defender's hands stay clasped behind the back. They can step, change level, and change angle. Hands go free once the legs are touched.
Score
Pin the hips for 5 seconds.
- Attacker — hips pinned to the mat for a continuous 5 seconds
- Attacker — chest-to-back or chest-to-chest with both hips covered
- Defender — feet on the mat, hips up, all contact broken
- Defender — both legs wrapped around one leg or the torso, 3 seconds
Rules
- Hands stay behind the back. Footwork, level, and head position until the legs are touched.
- One shot per exchange. Miss and get cleared, and the defender scores.
- No submissions. The headlock with the leg is control only, never a strangle.
Adjust
Easier
Keep the defender inside a 2m × 2m square so they cannot just walk away from range.
Harder
The defender frees one hand for hip frames only: no collar ties, posts, or down-blocks.
If it stalls
If the defender stays tall and gets shot under, cue: “Your head is the brake — lower it when they bend their knees.”
