Clinch Pummeling Defense

TakedownsStandingIntermediate

takedowns

Grapplers Collective, Clinch Pummeling Defense. 3-5 min rounds.

Problem

Maintaining inside position and preventing takedowns while being pressured in the clinch.

Tell the room

Attacker starts with double underhooks and drives. Defender pummels the inside position back, or breaks all the way out to neutral. The defender's underhook counts after 5 seconds; the attacker's double underhooks count after 30.

Setup

Start with the attacker inside. Attacker has double underhooks or a body lock, hips close, head on the chest. Defender has both overhooks, hips back, elbows down.

Score

Two ways to score each.

  • Defender — regain one underhook and hold it for 5 seconds
  • Defender — break to neutral standing with no dominant grips
  • Attacker — hold double underhooks for 30 unbroken seconds
  • Attacker — complete any takedown

Rules

  1. Defender solves it standing. No guard pulls. Recover the position on your feet.
  2. Work inside 3m × 3m. Do not circle away from the pressure to break the clinch.
  3. No strikes or headbutts. Keep the exchange to grips, frames, and hip position.

Adjust

Easier

Start the attacker with one underhook instead of two, and drop the 30-second clock so the defender can work without it.

Harder

Allow full takedown attempts from the start and remove the boundary, so the defender manages distance in open space.

If it stalls

If the defender never regains an underhook, match athletes by weight or start from one underhook each.
