Back Retention

pins

Grapplers Collective, Back Retention. 5-6 min rounds.

Problem

Maintaining back control through hooks and seatbelt under escape pressure.

Tell the room

Attacker keeps the seatbelt and at least one hook in. Defender clears both hooks and the seatbelt to get out. Attacker scores by holding back control for 60 seconds.

Setup

Start in full back control. Attacker seated behind with the seatbelt and both hooks in. Defender sitting upright, both hands on the choking arm's wrist.

Score

Hold 60 seconds, or escape.

  • Attacker — keeps the seatbelt and one hook for 60 seconds
  • Defender — clears both hooks and the seatbelt to guard, neutral, or top

Rules

  1. No submissions. The attacker plays for control only, never for the finish.
  2. Rebuild the seatbelt in 5 seconds. Lose it for longer and the defender scores.
  3. One hook lost keeps play alive. The attacker recovers it or compensates with body position.

Adjust

Easier

Start with the defender flat against the attacker's chest and extend the hold to 90 seconds.

Harder

Allow chokes for the attacker and cut the hold to 45 seconds.

If it stalls

If control dies inside 10 seconds every rep, match sizes closer or start from a body triangle.
