No-Gi Hook Guard

GuardGuard offenseIntermediate

guard

Grapplers Collective, No-Gi Hook Guard. 5-6 min rounds.

Problem

Hook-based offense and control solutions without gi grips.

Tell the room

No gi grips. Bottom keeps a hook on the lead leg and sweeps, takes the back, or enters ashi garami. Every score holds for 3 seconds.

Setup

Start in a no-gi hook guard. Top kneeling with the lead knee between the legs. Bottom supine with a hook on that lead leg and the heel cupped.

Score

Hold for 3 seconds.

  • Bottom — sweeps to top
  • Bottom — takes the back with a seatbelt and one hook
  • Bottom — enters ashi garami with the lead leg controlled
  • Top — clears the hooks and pins in side control, mount, or north-south

Rules

  1. No gi grips. No collar, sleeve, or pants grips for either player.
  2. Keep one hook on the lead leg. The bottom player may not switch to another guard.
  3. Top keeps the lead knee in. No withdrawing the leg to reset from outside.
  4. No submissions from the top. The passer solves the pass only.

Adjust

Easier

Run DLR only for the first rounds, and start the top player with both hands on the mat.

Harder

Drop the hook rule, open submissions for both players, and let the top player withdraw and re-enter.

If it stalls

If the bottom player keeps attacking after losing ankle control, cue them to recover the ankle first.
