The two primary submissions of the lower leg finish on opposite foot positions. The straight ankle lock finishes on maximal plantarflexion — the toes driven away from the shin. The heel hook finishes on rotation, and rotation requires a heel the attacker can grip.
The defender therefore has two answers, and each of them is the other attack’s precondition.
The boot — a rigid dorsiflexed ankle. It denies the plantarflexion the ankle lock needs, and it presents the heel.
The slip — maximal plantarflexion with the foot rotated away from the direction the heel hook would break. It takes the heel out of the attacker’s line, and it hands the ankle lock the exact position it is working toward.
There is no third foot position. The ankle plantarflexes or it dorsiflexes, and whichever the defender chooses tells a reading attacker which submission is now available.
Every other dilemma in this collection is built by an attacker: two threats are created, the defender can answer one, and answering it opens the other. This one runs the other way. The defender holds two answers, and each answer is what makes the opposing attack available.
That inversion changes who is under time pressure. In an attacker’s dilemma the defender must choose quickly and the attacker can wait. Here the defender’s choice is not the end of the exchange but the start of the next one, and the attacker’s skill is in reading which choice was made and switching to the submission it opened. The defender is not solving a problem; they are buying a moment.
heel exposure is configuration, not gripHeel exposure is determined by leg configuration, not by grip. The entanglement position determines whether the heel is exposed for attack; the grip follows from the position.
The foot’s angle is part of that configuration, and it is the part the defender still controls once the entanglement is set. This is why the dilemma exists at all: the defender cannot change the entanglement from inside it, but they can change the foot, and the foot decides which of the two finishes is reachable.
the foot is the handle, the knee is the targetIn heel hook attacks, the rotation is applied to the knee, not the foot. The foot is the handle; the knee is the target.
The slip works on the handle rather than the target — it does not protect the knee, it denies the attacker the grip that would reach it. That is also its limit: a slip that fails to clear the heel has changed nothing about the knee and has meanwhile given the ankle lock its finishing range.
