Grappling is usually described through techniques and positions. Theory of Everyjitsu asks what exists beneath those labels, what control actually is, how it is created and coached, how a grappler develops over years, and how any of that can be known. One language, from the mechanics of a grip to the meaning of a black belt.

Grappling knowledge is organised by position and technique, and that organisation is old, useful and incomplete. It tells you what people do. It does not tell you what they are trying to achieve, why two moves that look nothing alike solve the same problem, why a position that works beautifully for one grappler leaks for another, or what a coach should be looking at when a student is stuck. Two side controls with the same name can differ in what each grappler can still do.

This theory works one level down. It describes the state beneath the label, defines control as the evolving relationship between what each grappler can reach, enforce, preserve and prevent, gives that a working vocabulary, turns the vocabulary into the problems a grappler must become able to solve, and builds coaching, development, evidence and rank on top of that foundation. It is a formal theory in the ordinary sense: it defines its terms, states what follows from them, and keeps mechanics apart from what the rules make them worth.

Ten questions, each of which the previous one leaves open. Each page can be read on its own; read in this order, each layer is built on the one before it.

1What exists beneath the labels?The OntologyTwo bodies in one physical system, a state that changes, what each person commands and what nobody does, what each can see, do and choose, and rules that change what a state is worth without changing what it is. Positions and techniques are names for recurring arrangements of all that, and what is available, what this athlete can execute, what they recognise and what they choose are four separate facts.

2What is control, actually?Adversarial Viability Control TheoryControl is the evolving relationship between what each grappler can reach, enforce, preserve, interrupt and prevent, under an opponent trying to do the same. Reaching a position, being able to keep it, and being able to survive under it are three different properties, and a dominant-looking position can leave the opponent more live options than a loose-looking one.

3How is control created, kept, lost and converted?The Control GrammarA small language: four mechanical relations, two relations about relations, a mechanism layer, six questions about what a state permits, and separate layers for motion, the athlete, the rules and the ending. Precise enough to say why an action failed.

4What must a grappler become able to do?The capability architectureFifty problems in ten families derived from the grammar, organised by the control problem rather than by the position it happens in, with seventeen surfaces as a separate axis and worked exemplars attached to capabilities rather than the reverse.

5How are those capabilities coached?The coaching methodA loop, run repeatedly: model the athlete and the opponent, diagnose before prescribing, choose a target by comparing considerations that do not sit on one scale, make practice representative, and let the evidence change the next decision. The same method in a class and one to one.

6How do they develop over time?The universal developmental curriculumSix lanes braided rather than queued, a ten-system beginner trunk, and a shape that runs from safety through a common game to self-organisation and generative expertise. Universal in its requirements and floors, individual in everything else.

7How do we know development has occurred?Evidence-led progressionSeven states of evidence from first exposure to self-organised use, kept per capability and never summed. Has seen is different from can do; the unseen stays unknown rather than scoring zero; safety is never traded against strength elsewhere.

8How does development relate to rank?The developmental pathwayTwenty levels from a functional common game to durable generative expertise. Capability and evidence produce the level; the belt is a wrapper projected over it last, never the thing being developed.

9How does context change readiness?Competition readinessA cleared level and a ready competitor are different facts. Readiness is judged against a ruleset, an opponent class and a date as well as an athlete and a level, and it is never a rank.
