Underhook Back Step Finish

takedowns

Grapplers Collective, Underhook Back Step Finish. 3-5 min rounds.

Problem

Finishing the rearward dump from underhook with the lead foot already past the opponent's leg line.

Tell the room

Attacker starts with the underhook in and the lead foot already past their foot. Topple them backward without re-stepping. Defender escapes by clearing the underhook arm or rebuilding their stance for 2 seconds.

Setup

Start in the dump position. Deep underhook, head against the neck, attacker's lead foot planted past the defender's near foot. Defender upright, free hand posting, no whizzer.

Score

Backward landing, or stance recovered.

  • Attacker — defender lands butt or back, underhook held through the fall
  • Defender — clear the underhook arm to outside position
  • Defender — both feet back in front of the planted foot, hips square, 2 seconds

Rules

  1. Keep the foot past the leg line. No re-stepping. Stepping out before the finish gives the defender a point.
  2. Backward finishes only. No hip toss, no forward foot sweep, no shoulder throw.
  3. Stay on your feet. No dropping to a knee or hip to finish.

Adjust

Easier

Defender keeps the free hand behind their back, removing the post and exposing the backward off-balance.

Harder

Start with square feet so the attacker has to earn the step before finishing.

If it stalls

If the attacker holds and never commits, cue: “Their weight is already going there. Lean your chest in.”
